Introduction
The Sultanate of Sulu, officially known as the Islamic Sultanate of the Abode of Peace of Sulu, was an Islamic sultanate established by the Sulu people in 1457.
Its territory was located at the western end of what is today the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao in the southern Philippines, encompassing the Sulu Archipelago, as well as Basilan Province, areas between Tawi-Tawi Province, Palawan Island, northern Borneo, and other island groups surrounding the Sulu Sea. These territories are presently divided among Basilan Province of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region and Palawan Province of the MIMAROPA Region.
The Sultanate of Sulu maintained trade relations with China’s Ming and Qing dynasties, as well as with Malaysia and Indonesia. Its capital was located in Jolo.
